APPENDIX

List of Offenses by Category

The following categories are based on the system used by the NM Children, Youth, and Families Department to classify offenses. However, certain offense categories were modified for the purpose of this study. In this study, DWI was considered a separate category, while open container, drinking in the vehicle, and possession of alcohol in the vehicle were classified as alcohol offenses. CYFD, however, classifies all four as traffic offenses. In the study, traffic offenses, children in need of supervision (CHINS), and miscellaneous offenses were grouped into an "Other" category. It should be noted that although the offense history of the offenders in the study population included offenses from all five categories, not all offenses were represented.
